Your rights if you are arrested or in a voluntary police interview

- Ask for the duty solicitor. It is free. The solicitor does not work for the police. Say: "I would like the duty solicitor, please."
- You do not have to answer questions. You can say "no comment" until your solicitor arrives.
- If you are under 18 or vulnerable, ask for an Appropriate Adult. The interview cannot go ahead without one.
These rights come from the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 (PACE), sections 56 and 58, and Code C.
